Pep Guardiola on Brazil job after City’s loss to Sporting: No longer an option

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has playfully dismissed rumors about taking over as Brazil’s national team coach after his side’s recent 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League on November 11. Despite the speculation, Guardiola emphasized his commitment to Manchester City, determined to steer his team back on course following recent struggles.

The Sporting defeat marked City’s third consecutive loss across all competitions, which has added unexpected pressure on Guardiola and his squad after an otherwise promising start to the season. These recent losses have sparked rumours of Guardiola potentially exploring new opportunities, including the Brazil national team job, especially with his City contract due to expire in the summer of 2025. However, while Guardiola did not entirely dismiss the possibility of managing Brazil one day, he reiterated his current focus on City’s performance, clarifying that his primary commitment remains with the English champions.

“After losing 4-1, I am no longer an option for Brazil…More than ever, I want to lift up the team and return them to their top level,” Pep Guardiola said.

“I have to try and find an explanation. Sometimes it is just football…We are coming back to Manchester to prepare the game against Brighton. I am not giving up. Maybe people are waiting but I am not giving up.”

Adding to the mounting tension, City’s recent Premier League defeat to Bournemouth has widened the gap between them and league leaders Liverpool, who now sit two points ahead. This slip-up has not only caused frustration among fans but has also underscored the need for City to regain their early-season momentum.

The loss to Sporting, in particular, struck a nerve, with many questioning whether City can find their rhythm again under Guardiola’s guidance. Known for his meticulous tactical approach and ability to revitalise teams, Guardiola remains confident in his strategy, even amid this brief setback. His lighthearted dismissal of the Brazil rumours aimed to diffuse the situation, but his focus is firmly set on restoring City’s form and narrowing the points gap with Liverpool.

As Guardiola faces this challenging period, the upcoming fixtures will prove crucial in determining whether he can reignite Manchester City’s campaign. While the allure of coaching a team like Brazil might be tempting for Guardiola in the future, his mission to bring success to City remains his priority, as he looks to guide the club back to the top.
